the bear is caught inside his cage
he is wearing a hole in the earth
he is excellent at containing his rage
he has thereby doubled his worth
we are gathered around the temple floor
we have seen him give all but then we want more
the wild beast inside his cage
society contains his rage

here in these halls of industry
i hear the rhythms that are left to me
the news that comes from underground
a philosophical time bomb i once planted in this place
meant to expand my consciousness
i do not suppose it is long
that’s left me to be here in the dream
lay down cotton and cedar boughs
in the outbound canoe
i put my oars to the water
what is the current that has caught me?
will i follow the spiral path back home?

we let the political machine get out of control
we tried to write a doctrine for our eternal soul
we came together with the church and the state
we should have been able to figure out our fate
the dreams of Luther, the dreams of Kings
the dreams of Engles, the dreams of Marx
and George Washington standing in his little boat
watching his men die of freezing and of hunger
all these things come to pass
because of men and what they believe in
maybe we should stop thinking

Monumental Disgrace

monumental disgrace
i tried to hide it
where i thought he couldn’t find it
out in the alleyway
in the place we threw our refuse
buried under decades of odors
but his sharp nose found it again
the poison pen
we had written our laws
with the blood of martyrs
painted our world
dark colors
we liked to think of ourselves
as heroes
bravely facing the oncoming storm
we liked to think of our women, fighting
like rats in the cellar
and our laws, noble
as the marble halls we built
to enshrine them
but the demon named Legion
came forth from the field…

there is a light that comes shining
from a very long distance across the fields
i’ve spied it in my dreams
i am looking into the past
there is a light that comes in answer
from within
there are lights that are searching the heavens
i see what my father saw
i stand in the same place
where he stood before i was born
i feel the weight of the world
i feel the weight of the world
